My 4-speed tranny will not shift into 4th when the weather is hot -- can this be repaired without replacing the entire tranny? I don't know much about the tranny, but the car is an Isuzu and the engine is a 1.6 liter 4-banger.

Did you check the transmission fluid level?

Yes, and I just had the fluid and filter replaced -- no improvement.

Overdrive or 4th gear has the fewest number of clutches and therefore is often the first to go out. A reputable shop can perform a pressure check on the 4th gear drum to verify, but given your symptoms, I think you are better off to save your money for a transmission overhaul.

You might try some Lucas transmission additive, very thick and it will boost pressure which may allow you to limp along for a while. Good luck

Is this an automatic or manual? I have never heard of a transmission fluid filter in a manual.

There may be a trouble code that can be read.

Depending on how much longer you want to keep this car, and how you use it, it may be more practical to drive it as-is, certainly till it gets worse. If the most practical repair is a used or rebuilt transmission, there is little downside financially to driving it as-is. MPG may not be quite what it would be, but that's it I think.

It's an automatic. The ECM isn't indicating any trouble -- the car simply slips out of fourth, or if it's particularly hot, will not go up into 4th at all. Cannot drive it on the freeway, as fuel mileage is atrocious without 4th and it takes 3,000 RPM's just to do 50 MPH in 3rd.

Your tranny is what we experts refer to as "slippin"or "burning out" It is caused by wear and the heat produced inside of the transmission. A new overhaul is what you need but to save money you may find a used one that still has alot of life left in it. The lucus stuff is very good and at this point you have nothing to lose by trying it. It may indeed help it to keep going for a while. Remember the more it slips the hotter it will get and the hotter it gets the worse it becomes.

Adding a oil cooler to it if possible might help, and it would help any replacement tranny as well.

Many auto trannys these days use bonded paper clutch plates. These tend to fail quickly once they have a first problem. So this is the time to decide what you will do, junk the car, / fix the car.

And how you will do it, replace with used, replace with rebuilt, or rebuild what you have. Any which way, if it is save the vehical add a oil cooler.
