Do not know the technical name or trade name of this widget..
When you change out a battery or work on the electrical system of a car/truck now a days you need to disconnect the battery... what happens is you loose the diagnostic codes.. What is the name of the widget you put into the electrical system to solve this problem..either in the aux / cigarette port or directly on the hot lead cable..
Its a 9 v battery hooked to a lighter make socket. You plug it in and 9v is enough to store radio stations and any setting that are stored in the ecm.. Here is one..

You can also get them that run on mains power. If you use a 9V be sure to turn the dome light, etc. off. I like to run the driver's window down, leave the doors shut, and reach in to plug the memory saver just before disconnecting the battery.
The 9V is fine for changing a battery or alternator, but for a job that will go on several hours the one that uses mains power is better. IMHO.
Probably there is a diode in the plug that keeps the 12 V system from back-charging the 9V battery. I will test mine with a VOM.
Many dash instruments run on about 10V, older VW cars do anyway.
