I had a 78 king cobra in 84 85 I loved that car
I was 17 18 years old and drove it hard it looked good and was fast
The ford 302 is one of the best motors ever made to build and make more horse power farely easy and it will take a lot of abuse.
I lived in Ar where the roads were a chalenge and that car handled great. I took a lot of corners at 100 mph that alot of cars wont do at 50.
Like serveral cars I had I wish I had kept it.
Ford really embarrassed themselves amongst knowledgeable car guyz with this mutt; imagine: a hopped-up Ford Pinto in drag! I think my '96 Ford 7.3 PS Crewcab 4X4 F350 (yeah, with a few Banks mods...) could probably outrun it! Certainly over-run it!

His point was the Mustang II was a slap to the face of the true Mustang. Which to call it a Mustang, I think so too. However I still think the dolled up Mustang II all black with gold stripes and aluminum slots looks like a nice car. Even better than the Pinto.
I think Ford would have been better off giving the car a new name instead of calling it a Mustang II but....
I will say this....I had a friend that bought a '78 Cobra II T top car that I actually got to drive. His was a 302 model with the C4 auto. I loved it. It was an easy to steer very maneuverable car. I believe it was due to a shorter wheel base....I can't remember. I do remember how easy it was to bust a u turn dead middle of an intersection without having to even back up or do a 2 point turn around. I believe the rack and pinion plays a role in this as well.
Speaking of which.....I do know quite a few people like the front end off a Mustang II for the rack and pinion to retrofit to I believe their hot rods.
Maybe I need to keep my eye out for a Cobra II and add a supercharger on the 302 and a few other performance enhancements. Maybe I'll even get lucky and get it on the cheap since no one really likes them anyways. Sometimes it's the ugly ducking comes out on top.

Considering Lee Iacocca was the father of both, I think not. Considering the original Mustang was just a 6 cyl Falcon economy car with a slighty sportier body, I think not.
The '71-73 Mustang was what was a slap in the face of the "true Mustang." An overweight, overstyled pig in comparison. The MII was an attempt to bring the Mustang back to what it ORIGINALLY was. And it sold better than any other Mustang other than the original '65.
