U.S. Finds Electronics NOT The Reason For Runaway Toyotas (http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/business/7417950.html - broken link)
A government investigation into Toyota safety problems has found no electronic flaws to account for reports of sudden, unintentional acceleration. Transportation officials and engineers with NASA say two mechanical safety defects previously identified by the government — sticking accelerator pedals and gas pedals that can become trapped in floor mats — are the only known causes for the reports of runaway Toyotas. Both issues were the subject of large recalls by Toyota.
Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood says the department's 10-month study has concluded there is no electronic-based cause of unintended high-speed acceleration in Toyotas.
Okay, when will members of Congress individually apologize to Toyota executives, Toyota employees, Toyota dealerships, Toyota owners, and Toyota shareholders?
Sadly, Toyota cannot sue for the billions of dollars that Congress' wreckless accusations (stated as if they were factual - and now proved not true) caused the company, its shareholders, and affected participants. What a bunch of clowns.

Regardless of whether or not the electronics were at fault, there was a material defect in the accelerator pedal that could cause it to stick. There is also the fact that Toyota was aware of possible issues for some time (since 2003 or so) and never took action to correct it or follow the protocols for such issues.
If anything, Toyota's issue was less about the unintended acceleration and more about their efforts to keep it quiet.
People putting thick all-weather floor mats (factory or aftermarket) on top of the existing cloth floor mats was one cause...and should not be blamed on the car manufacturer. The other cause was using a floor mat (cloth or all-weather) and not attaching the mat to the floor so it won't slide forward and trap the gas pedal. That too should not be blamed on the car manufacturer.
Then of course there were numerous people that falsely claimed their car accelerated so they could sue Toyota under false pretense. Those people should be prosecuted. And, the car manufacturer should not be blamed.
Lastly, there were many people that simply do not know how to drive and stepped on the gas pedal instead of the brake pedal and claimed they didn't. Those people are just stupid dumb-asses and should be made to wear a clown suit with their name and paraded down Main Street of the town of city where they live every day for 10 months. And, the car manufacturer should not be blamed.
Toyota got a bad rap that has already cost billions of dollars and affected millions of people without justification. Unfortunately the damage doesn't totally stop because the brand's reputation will continue to feel the results into the future. Toyota was tried, found guilty and hung by idiots without proof.
There's a lot of you people here that should be ashamed of yourself...and made to wear a STUPID sign around your neck for 10 months.
Wasn't even a serious problem in the grand scheme of things but Toyota's pi$$ poor management of the situation turned it into a wildfire. They have themselves to blame mostly. The damage is already done... no amount of fanboys are going to change anything now.

Never. Why would they have to?

And there you have it.
They've got more issues then just SUA. Rusty pickup truck frames, sludged engines, bad fuel systems to name a few. This is a company which claimed to stand heads and shoulders above the rest for quality and has been shown to be covering issues to maintain that image.
