We have oil burner small cars pushing 50 mpg why can't we have an off road small truck that gets the same? How about a Prius technology type vehicle that's capable of 4 x 4?
Makes no sense, as if you look at what is available in Australia, you can get any type of vehicle you want with diesel. They exist, just not in the US.
Also note that the horsepower of the standard engine in vehicles is lower. One doesn't need 300HP to take Billy to school, or commute in 25 MPH traffic in the morning.
VW has recently released a great little 4X4 diesel called the Amarok, it's available in central and south America, I don't know why it hasn't been introduced here, I would probably get one if it were, but I did see one down in Houston once, so someone's importing them, well either that or VW was testing it.

Or probably someone visiting from south-of-the-border.
Here in SoCal, I've seen my fair share of Chevy Monza's, a couple Peugeots, a SEAT, and most recently, a VW CrossFox. All had BC or Sonora plates.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think he had TX plates actually. I freaked out when I saw it, because I thought VW might've changed their mind and was going to sell it here afterall.

No, it's due to US import and emissions laws. The government makes it so prohibitively expensive to jump through all their environmental hoops that most foreign makers choose not to do it.
That just sucks, that is exactly what I'm looking for.
