It sounds like what I would expect a dealer to charge. Find an independent garage that will let you watch them do it, someplace on a funky back street where you need a GPS to find them. My garage man just tells me to bring in my own oil and filter, and he changes it for $12. I can always get synthetic oil on advertised special at an auto parts chain, so my four quarts of synthetic and a quality filter and $12 for my man, and I'm in and out for $30 and I know what kind of oil. and filter I'm getting and that he won't cross-thread the drain bolt or forget it completely. If you live in an area with lots of Hispanics, look for a place with a sign that says Taller Mecanico. Go to babelfish and see how to say Pueden cambiar mi aceite, por favor. No $90/hr shop labor there.

Also, keep an eye out for deals and coupons. Oil changes are a very competitive industry.

One of the reasons I started changing my own oil again is because I can use 100% synthetic with a better than OEM filter for less total $ than most places charge for dyno.
I was considering going back to changing my own, but all said and done it's just not worth my time and trouble. WM is basically charging $18 for labor, and as someone else mentioned, it can be found for even less. It's worth $18 for me to not have to get dirty, deal with jackstands, dispose of the oil, etc. Plus WM and the dealer (I just found out) tops off fluids, which saves me from buying all the stuff to do it myself.

Yes, it's all about convenience for me, so for just a few bucks someone else can deal with the mess.

Same here, plus the sixth quart, plus the upgraded filter. $73.55 out the door.

Yeah unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it) it's almost never worth the hassle to change your own oil.

A dino oil change is about +/-$5

A synth change is about +$15-$30

So...

However anything but oil changes is worth working on your own, if you have the tools and know how.

Changing my own oil is much cheaper than paying someone to do it. The oil change chains charge about $45 or after all fees. And I have to wait most of the time before they start. The super low price change with coupon uses cheap bulk dyno oil and even cheaper filters.

Start to finish at home on most of my vehicles is between 30-45 minutes. $30 total for full synthetic and PureOne filter. I spend less actual time than if I take it somewhere, even while on another errand. I put the old oil in the 5 qt jugs, accumulate 4 or 5 of them, and take it to WalMart for recycling.

No way! I would never go to those oil change shops like JiffyLube... I saw them cheat me too many times... I ordered a premium synthetic and they gave me regular and thought I wouldn't notice which nozzle they took... and still they charge me for the premium... That's the last time they get my money...

If you just won't DIY, by all means find yourself a good independent shop, preferably a one-man outfit. At dealers you will have the "lot monkey" changing the oil, probably, and at WalMart - Google "People of WalMart" - do you want these guys fooling with your car?
