I had a GPS cord that has gone bad but didn't realize it until it short-circuited the cigarette outlet on my '99 Civic plus the outlets on at least 2 other cars.

Is this something that can be fixed by someone who is a little mechnically-challenged (slightly below average mechnical ability)?

All you need to do is change the fuse. On most cars it is labeled as the courtesy fuse.

It also commonly controls the overhead light, clocks, and the constant power function to the radio.

Strangely, none of the other functions have been affected on all of the cars that had their cigarette lighters taken out.. anyways, I'd need to check the fuses first..

Same with my car. Lighter stopped working, (something blew it out), but the other functions continued to work. Just a fuse, believe it or not.

It's been a while since I've had daily experience with fuse assignments, basically the 80's/90's. Sorry, geez.

most modern cars have several 12V plugs, requiring a dedicated fuse.

It happened to me on an Acura, and it was only the one outlet that ceased to function properly. It was just a fuse, and since it happened near the dealership, I went there to have them change it for me, which they did at no charge, but I would have been able to do it myself had I not been in the immediate vicinity.

On my Kia none of my outlets worked, I found a TSB bout aftermarket phone chargers shorting out the outlets, replaced the fuse, everything was fixed.
