Participating in a few other threads gave me an idea.....Start a list of 10 late model cars that you think would be future collectibles. Price is not an issue, nor is the fact some have already started to climb well past their original MSRP:
So if you had the money/the garage space which 10 would you buy:
1. Carrera GT
2. 911 GT2 RS
3. 911 GT3 4.0
4. Ford GT- 2006/Heritage colors (Gulf Blue/Orange)
5. BMW Z8 (Alpina 2003 would be the rarest)
6. Mercedes SLR Convertible
7. Ferrari Enzo
8. Ferrari 288 GTO
9. Ferrari F40
10. 1994 911 turbo 3.6
Here's the thing, most of the picks are specialty cars or were limited production. Who knew when they came out that a run of the mill Chevrolet from the late 1950s would become a collectible? Or an early 60s Ford Galaxie?

Going back further, a Model T?
You are correct but some cars just "hit all the right emotions" from speed to body designs to new technology. Car collecting is a relatively new hobby, compared to say jewels or art collecting. A 57 Chevy was nice when new but most got driven into the ground, so when a nice one pops up it gets a premium price due to the rarity today.
However there are some "rare cars" that no one cares about so to quote Reggie Jackson: "don't ever buy a car you don't love, because if you can't sell it atleast you will have a car you still love!" Reggie had an insane car collection years ago.....
Edit: apparently he still collects cars buying a Ferrari F40 in January 2014 (Gas Monkey Garage rebuild car) and here is a link to his collection of Chevy stuff: http://sonic.net/bbdon/features/jax/index.htm
It will be as it has always been. People will collect what they can afford and remember. Considering only a very small minority collect cars that take most people a lifetime of savings the following will be the most popular.
Camaro
Mustang
Corvette
Challenger
Charger
F150
C1500
Jeep
GMC Syclone
GMC Typhoon
Buick T-Type ( some are more rare than GNs)
Buick Grand National GNX
90s Corvette ZR1
Late 90s Ford Cobra aka Terminators
70s Dodge Lil Red Express
Ford Lightnings
Dodge Vipers
Ferrari Testarossa ( only bringing in 50-60 today on auction/sales but will be pretty rare later)
Well pretty much most 80s Ferraris with some exceptions
Some 90/00 superxpcars Ferrari some Lambos the higher priced ones not the " cheap" ( relative term when referring to
Lambos I'm talking about the basic v10 Lambo)
The Countach will eventually be a collector.
The list can go on. Most of these cars will be collectible because it was some guys dream car as a kid/young guy and if he gets older and successful he's gonna want to relive his younger days. That's the reason people are willing to soy 20-30k for a 1979 Trans Am. It sure as hell isn't because its the latest and greatest. It brings back memories of. What to them was a better time. And yes there are the pretentious who simply buy so oeople can stare at them. Hell I'm seeing 80s Camaros and people are asking 10-12k. Yeah ok not happening for me but I'm sure someone may drop the coin to get one. It's just gonna be a long time before they become money makers but if the desire bug hits anything is possible. Hell look at the late 70s Mustang Mach 1. 6 months ago you couldn't give one away. A car show on tv gets one price doubles overnight
