Will a 2WD suv be able to head up to Tahoe in the snow? Or do I need a 4wd vehicle for such an endeavor? I'm deciding on whether to get a 2wd or 4wd fj cruiser. But not sure I can justify the extra 5k for using it once a year to go skiing.

You could always just go With the 2wd model and Rent a 4x4 SUV when you head up to the Ski-Resort once a year.

There are many threads on C-D and other fora on this and related topics. Search C-D and Google things like AWD 4WD FWD and snow tires. You'll find many opinions and lots of tech chat.

My opinion is if you want to drive in the snow, get stuff for it.

I'd go with 4wd just for the resale value. A FJC 4X4 will keep it's value quite nicely (I know, I sold my '07 FJ for 21K last year; I bought it brand new for just over 24K).

A 2wd will not do nearly as well. Plus, you may find you are looking for reasons to use 4wd once you've got one!

I've only NEEDED my 4x4 a few times.

but when I do... I'm VERY glad to have it.

I will NOT be buying a 2WD again.
