I don't know about Toyotas.
Huh. Wonder how exactly it computes it, then. I know I've forgotten to reset it once or twice after a change only to have it come on a short time later (nowhere near when it needs changed again).

Anywho, I know my lil xB comes on every 5K after it's reset like clockwork.

You sound like my brother in law that refuses to use EZ PASS because "BIG BROTHER" would be watching where he's going (he's probably one of the most straight arrow guys I know). I'm sure he loves sitting in line at the toll lanes on a Friday night in the summer, heading to the shore on the Garden State Parkway while people using EZ PASS are flying by at 60 mph in the express lanes, yet he still uses credit cards for all his purchases, is constantly on his cell phone and always poking around on the internet. Do you honestly think that if "BIG BROTHER" really wanted to keep track of someone they would need to track the "BLACK BOX" in you car? By the way, where exactly is my "BLACK BOX"? I have six cars and never seen it.

This is from Ford. They're all basically the same.

When should I change my oil?
Many 2011 model year Ford vehicles are equipped with an Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor (IOLM). The IOLM uses actual engine operating conditions to calculate the oil change interval by using an algorithm. The IOLM will indicate when the oil change service interval should be completed by displaying ENGINE OIL CHANGE SOON or OIL CHANGE REQUIRED in the message center.
The system requires you to reset the IOLM after an oil change. Missing a “reset” at an oil change will result in a premature OIL CHANGE REQUIRED message.
I have 5 Fords and agree with your post. The other thing they push now when you purchase a new Ford is the "VEHICLE HEALTH REPORT". This is basically how Ford describes it.
After users register at syncmyride.com and activate VHR, they can conveniently generate reports using simple voice commands in
the vehicle for display on syncmyride.com.
When the user initiates VHR, SYNC collects the vehicle’s mileage and diagnostic data from the major electronic systems and
transfers the data to Ford using the customer’s Bluetooth-paired and connected mobile phone.
A comprehensive report is generated from vehicle data and includes system information and recommended actions for any
displayed vehicle warning indicators, open recalls, Ford scheduled maintenance, and unserviced maintenance and wear items
from previous dealer visits.
Users can select to receive a text message or e-mail when their report is ready on syncmyride.com. They can print the report,
e-mail it to others or, in one click, be at their preferred dealer’s Web site with their health report information waiting to schedule
service online. Depending on the user’s preference settings, SYNC can also deliver a text message alert to the user’s cell phone if
a severe issue exists with one of the SYNC-monitored systems.

I do like the 911 assist feature in case your involved in accident.

But that time frame is WAY, WAY longer than a missed oil change will ever reach. You would have to miss a Lot of oil changes before the oil ever reached that condition.

Does the dealer you bought it from claimed to have changed the oil? Can't you just pull the dipstick and look? Does the oil look extremely dirty and burnt?

This is kind of related. I remember selling a 1995 Pontiac Grand Am when it was about 3 years old. The car was kind of a lemon but when I sold it, it was in perfect condition. So we are on the test drive and the "service engine soon" light comes on.

The people still bought the car! I couldn't believe it. The guy said he wasn't worried about it. He didn't even try to get me to lower the price.
