With quality issues and then war/political issues in Yugoslavia they struggled to compete with VW in Europe, and other countries such as the U.S. never liked them during the years they tried here, 1985-1992. They finally folded in 2008 when people in their own country wouldn't buy them.
Well, I have not talked to them, but there is someone here in Wichita Falls that does still drive one. I see it every now and then. It's actually in pretty good shape. Last saw it a month ago. I'll talk to 'em next time and let you know.
The local dealer who sold them said they lost a ton of money on them . Everyone sold had some problems, windows falling out, doors misaligned, door handles loose, fenders loose , tailpipes falling off, the list goes on and on. It was a lemon's lemon.
My search lead me to just 3 for sale. One with 1,800 miles on it. Many may not be surprised though that a yugo only has 1,800 miles on it after all these years. Then again some of you will be surprised that it made it to 1,800 miles. I have never sat in one of these cars. I have known people that owned them back when they were on the market. I don't know anyone that kept one of them though. I would say that if you are looking for an inexspensive car then head on over to Kia or Hyundai. Remember that with inflation and the added items that todays cars have, those brands would be similar in price and I am thinking that you would be able to put more than 1,800 miles on the car. LOL
Those prices are CRAZY, nothing like asking four times was the car sold for NEW.
It isn't like it is some classic collector car or something.
In the early/mid 80's a friend and I went and looked at them at a show that was at a local Mall, base model was something like $4,000, a year later you could get all the parts you wanted at the local junk yard.
Yugos were made in Yugoslavia in an area that is now Serbia.
For an A to B work car they were not too bad.
In 1999 UN fighter planes bombed the plant.
