Simple car repairs, what’s biggest can of worms you’ve opened up? (cost, VW)

Case 1

A simple investigation on why a piece of rear window molding was loose resulted in:

New clips being ordered at cost of $30.

New clips being installed only to find the molding is rubbish.

Molding getting violently thrown across the garage and picked up and bent in into a pretzel.

The opposite molding getting torn off thrown across the garage.

Two new pieces of moldings being ordered and now $225 later the molding fits tight.


Case 2

A simple oil pan reseal on a 2.0 VW Beetle.

Tube of VW sealant about $12.00

Oil pan removed to find huge chunks of the oil pump chain tensioner in the bottom of the oil pan.

Order a host of other parts to the tune of $250. The timing belt and lower pulley have to come off to repair this one.

I had that one back together after about 3 weeks of waiting for parts.

I still have no idea why that tensioner was shattered, but it had been in the pan for a awhile.
