I replace my batteries every 4 years or whenever it hesitates starting up in cold whether, whichever comes first. the $100 or so isn't worth getting stranded over.
Had an '03 Intrepid where the original (Bosch) battery lasted 4 years. Replaced it with a Superstart from O'Reilly, which lasted 4 more years until I traded it in.
In an '05 Vibe, the original (Delco) battery lasted 2 years. Replaced it with another Superstart, which lasted 5 years until I sold the car.
