It's easy when you have a job and make money.

I feel sorry for myself.........
My car engine seized on me,and I owe $3600 on it. Only had it for 2 years. Started out with 20,000 miles, put another 87,000 miles on it.
339 monthly payments.

Signed a 39 month lease yesterday for a new Nissan Murano 2013.
18,000 miles a year. Free maintainence execpt brakes and tires.
Monthly payment $520.

Insurance....omg.
250 for the first car monthly
300 for the lease car monthly
Both with comprehensive and collision.
But that's because of NJ no fault law,and its stupid.

Lord help me.

Cold hard cash.
Cash isn't going to sway a dealer at all. They get cash for every car they move from your bank or your pocket.
They actually get more when you finance through them..

My car I bought new a Ford Focus I only financed because there was a $500 rebate if financed through Ford..I payed it off once the loan was in their system two weeks later for a savings of $325 altogether.

I don't keep a checkbook or a register, and only check the balance online once a week or so.

My takeaway from this thread is that you love your $16,000 mustang.

???
$10K in 1970 is what, $30K today? Yeah, that'd never buy a nice car...
You totally misunderstood that one.

Cars come in three categories: Tools. Toys. Investments.

Those that are Tools need to justify their cost in utility.
Those that are Toys need to fit into a buyer's budget for discretionary purchases.
Those that are Investments are extremely rare and seldom driven, and few people, even in this forum, have one.

Some are a blend of Tool and Toy. In that case, the user needs to subtract the utility value from the price, and consider the remainder to be a Toy purchase.

I've got a cheap car now that practically anybody could afford new: 2012 Smart. Pymt $139/mo. Insurance $115/mo (rip off IMO...was quoted $75/mo when I lived in the suburbs but have since moved to the city proper and got nailed.)

I've had it for about 6 months now and it has about 2500 miles on it. No maintenance scheduled till 10,000 and a $30 tank of gas lasted 8 weeks last time I filled up.

Unfortunately,it costs money to go to work.
Sometimes people think cars last forever.
To me,cars are money pits. Every single car I ever had, either the tranny or engine went.
With my Pt Cruiser, both went within a month of each other. I also changed the oil and other maintenece on time.

Good mechanics are HARD to find. I don't trust them at all. I don't want to be bothered with them again, ever.

This is why in the long run leasing is better. I finally have it figured out. I will never buy a car again. Lease is it for me.
Ain't got to worry about maintainence. They take care of it.
It costs money to have a decent car like Toyota or Honda.
If you own a car,you are on your own after 3 years regarding any breakdowns.
