North America is almost the only place in the world where "color" license plates are mandatory, Most other countries issue plates that are a black/white motif, or you can choose to have your registration number displayed on a custom plate.
Texas has switched this year to a beautiful retro plate, plain white with black numerals, and the word Texas in plain black block letters, without additional adornments.
I used to care and refused to put them on my cars (required in NV and CO). Now that I'm old (31), I could care less. It's just a money sucking car to me now.
Sucks for you. I've never been pulled over because of it and when I have gotten pulled over. It has never been mentioned. I've done this on every car that I bought that didn't have it already on. Why destroy a perfectly good front bumper for an ugly plate.
I'm considering it. Just mounted my plates on my new car... had to drill the bumper. Ugh.
The state I'm in has plenty of styles to plates to choose from for a fee though.
Drilling the bumper on a brand new car was one of the hardest things I've had to do to a car. No way around it except for the plates holders that mount from underneath, but that looks a little stupid. Sigh.
I guess it's too late this time, but for future reference you can buy a front license plate bracket that screws into the front tow hook mount.
I've had a front plate save my bumper from a scratch several times. Goes both ways.
In a state with no front plate, you can put a Confederate flag there. Most rear-only states are in the south.
Rear-plate-only states are Michigan, Kansas, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Delaware.
Some Texans remove their front plate when driving through Louisiana, to avoid getting pulled over and ticketed for some pretext.

Thanks for the list! Did not know which states were rear only. I'm from North Carolina.
I have a Tungsten grey Mustang with black stripes, and the green and white Colorado plates really stick out, but I'm not going to pay $50 more for special plates. It's a license plate.
