I know that you mean, but some vehicles were meant to get dirty and dinged up. Shows they have been put to good use and are not just garage queens. It doesn't automatically mean they are neglected mechanically.
I live in SC, where 3 out of 4 vehicles are heavy duty pickups. I know people who use them to haul all sorts of things, and regularly go mudding. But when they are ready to go on a night on the town, those things are so clean you could eat off the truk bed. Just because you beat it up doesn't mean you can't shine it up.
Its only called an S550 in the US to make you feel more "prestigious" about driving a taxi. Its called S500 in the rest of the world.
MB taxis are rarely S550's, more like C/E class with small displacement gas motors or even diesel.....if you are going to generalize try to get the models straight.

Again, you don't need to feel so ashamed about driving a taxi. Anything that think the S class isn't a taxi is in denian.

You must be from the city
I don't go muding for fun, but to get in and out of my property in the months the snow's melting. There is no keeping a clean car/truck for those months.
Also the inevitable dings, scraps & scratches a working truck gets don't just shine up for a night on the town. My truck just got a new $1,500 aftermarket clutch, but it still proudly sits on steel rims. The money I do spend on the truck goes into performance, not looks.
Same with my KTM 300. The bike gets dropped, run into trees etc. Plastics & carbon fiber parts just don't polish up after that. I only clean it when I need to work on it, but it gets premium pre-mix and a clean air filter before each ride.
And it's not just about off road. Race your sports car or bike at the track, it's going to get beat up.
IMHO there's nothing wrong with keeping your ride clean, if that's what you're into. But I don't look at the paint when I see a nice ride in the parking lot. I look at the tires. That will tell you everything you need to know about the driver and the way the car has been driven & taken care of.
That we drive a lot and want a reliable car that gets great gas mileage?
We also probably have the most trucks sold here too? I wonder what that says about us?
That's one theory. Another that Californians like bland econo boxes. Plenty of tree huggers out west, too Although, we have our share of environmentalists in PA. Doesn't compare to a merc, bmw, etc. Not even in their league. Hence, the price difference.

As an escapee from LA, I can verify that just isn't true. There are plenty of boring cars, but by and large California (Southern CA especially) has the largest proportion of wild and extreme cars stuck in traffic on the planet.
