Is it possible to get a $2-3k car(vehicle) or less and it go another 5 years or maybe a bit less with minimal work on it? I've read the exact opposite before then again I've read this happening to many people on here!
They get the $2k 2002 X car with 189k, but it only needs $450 in parts over the span of 3 years. Sure routine maintenance still needs done, but all cars need that done. As another poster said before you're buying an old car, no need to replace everything to make it new. I don't mind working on cars. I value the knowledge learned. I'm no expert, but Google and YouTube can teach you anything.
I'm frugal, I don't want to pay 5k if I don't have too. Were really getting into paying off debts and adding more sucks. 2.5k, 5k, 10k, it all sucks. If I can lessen the blow though I certainly will.
Has anyone done this? Like I said I don't mind working on cars. Every week in the garage or some completely unreliable car wouldn't fly though.

Spend $2K on a used car and get another 3 years out of it? No.
Done spend $250 on a used car and get another year out of it and donate it to my patient and he still drives her, 4 years later.
Just spent $1000 on a 2000 Lexus with 153K miles on it, that runs like a champ, and spent G.T. maybe $600 on repairs. And it's worth $5000.

Maybe look at a 87-96 F150 with the 4.9 I-6 it may cost more in fuel but the parts are cheap and plentiful and are easy to find in OEM, Aftermarket and at the local Auto wreckers ...
They are simple and easy enough to be a DIY vehicle for most Routine stuff as well as easy to find any independent shop to work on them and $2500-$3K should get you a pretty decent one.

Yes.
7 years ago I paid $2500 for a car for my daughter that is still driven daily. 5 years ago I paid $3200 for a 4 wheel drive truck for my son, it's still driven daily.
I agree that maintenance costs can be a whole lot cheaper than monthly payments.
Of course not. But you do have to spend more than one Saturday afternoon looking for a good one for a lower price. They are out there. There are $1,000 cars that will give you good service for a couple of years, maybe with a few hundred in repairs.
I paid $1500 for my last 91' Wrangler. I got a little over three years out of it. I just paid 1500 for another Wrangler of the same year, but in much better condition. I'm confident it will last just as long.
i bought my taurus wagon about 4 years ago for $2500. i have another $1000 in repairs in the car, my health issues prevent me from doing much work on the car these days, or that number would be much lower. and it still runs strong.
I would have said 'yes' but now I know someone who drives a 1998 Explorer with nearly 200K miles
(given to him for free!) and it just keeps going and going....
My one Son buys and sells cars. He recently bought a 60,000 mile 93 Buick for $1100. Today he called me and he found a 95 Lincoln Town Car for $ 2200 that has 85,000 on it and both cars are super clean. Both cars run great and have a lot of miles left in them.
There are some lemons out there in that price range, but you just have to look around and be patient.......and have a good mechanic look it over before you buy it.
I sold my wife's perfectly well running very reliable 1995 Gmc SUV for 2500 simply because I didn't use it. 4 cars two drivers and I was remodeling the garage. The truck was driven a few days every 6 months. I had all my records for maintenance and repairs
