I avoid city driving in Bulgaria because of:
- drivers using the horns way too much (they use horns more often than blinkers)
- drivers tailgating - at stop lights they get especially close. I always prefer to have about a foot between my car and the one in front of me but that's very rare over here.
- congested streets
- few suitable places to park

As a whole driving here is not exciting at all. And since public transport is slow and smelly I walk by foor for miles every day.

Darn!
I was planning to visit Bulgaria so that I could experience Europe's most severe air and soil pollution, its shortest life-expectancy, and its worst roads. All of that just sounded so...inviting.

But, now that you tell me about their bad drivers and the difficulty in finding a parking space, I will just have to change my plans.
I hear that Ukraine is very nice at this time of year...

In many countries the traffic markings, signs, and signals are considered suggestions not hard rules so horns are used a lot to warn/signal. In some of the world traffic is a very scary experience especially coming from the US. I have feared for my life riding in Taxis in many places.

I, too, never drive when I go to Bulgaria.

Come to think of it, I never go to Bulgaria at all.

Here's one. It still looks pretty much the same as it did last time I drive in Bulgaria, in 1971:

I imagine this is a product of decades of communism which have left the roads too small to carry the increasing volume of cars, since cars were a luxury years ago. According to an article from Novinite, 25% of New Bulgarian Drivers Buy Their Driver's License - Novinite.com - Sofia News Agency, corruption also has a role in the acquisition of driver's license; I imagine most of the aggressive driving is due to a lack of driver's education, as well as the pervasive culture of condoning such behavior. During you time in Bulgaria, did you see many accidents?
