I noticed my Garmin Nuvi's map is way out of date. Looked in Garmin's web site and they want $50 for map update. I do have an iPhone but I prefer a dedicated GPS unit on the windshield. There is gotta be a way to get non-Garmin maps somewhere.
Don't laugh. My first to go source planning a road trip is paper map.
I usually don't refer to paper maps anymore but I'll at least get a sense of the route whenever going somewhere new. That way, if my phone's mapping system isn't behaving, I might still find my way there rather than scrambling to find my location AND trying to pay attention to the road at the same time.
Mine's about 4 years old so maps current to 2010, still my primary GPS when driving to unfamiliar locations.
I prefer the user interface better than Google Maps on my smartphone when traveling but will use the latter if I'm driving through a major city or complicated road network during rush hour for the benefit of traffic notifications.
Mine did not come with lifetime maps and the screen is a bit small at 4 inches and the battery dies very quickly when not plugged in to the car charger so I'll probably invest in a bigger nuvi with lifetime maps soon.
I like having a dedicated GPS because my phone battery gets obliterated when using it for such purposes.
I still carry a current Rand McNally nationwide map though just in case a solar flare knocks out some satellites, haha.

I thought I was the only one that did that. LOL We were in a suburb of Denver a couple years ago in a Starbucks. We were looking at a AAA map and asked the guy exactly where were we. He laughed at us and said he didn't know people still used those. :-)
On long road trips, I'll use my Nuvi even though we have factory nav in our Highlander. Sometimes I will have one on the final destination and the other on a town we might want to stop for fuel or food.
I always take the Nuvi when traveling for business. I find it way easier to use than a smart phone. I always ask for a paper map when renting a car. It gives me a better idea of the general area.
GPS has made it so much easier and safer to travel. I wonder how I ever found anything before GPS
