I'm trying to figure out the same thing because they claimed mid-20s for mixed (Hyundai did fudge some other numbers but supposedly not this one). It was down at 18mpg for mixed driving even at 5k mileage, which should be past break-in. When I did pure highway, it was able to do over 30mpg.
I was getting around 25 m.p.g. or so in town and 30 or so on the highway with a Camry, and I thought this was pretty good. But I wanted to do better, so when it came time to get a new car, I got a Camry Hybrid. Now I'm getting right around 40, consistently. (With just over 5,000 miles so far, my best tank was 43 and my lowest was 37.) I'm loving the extra fuel economy and the extended range (around 600 miles on a tank) that I'm getting.
Now that I'm experiencing this sort of efficiency, I can't quite see myself going back. So I guess my threshold would at least in the high 30s, if not more.
More is better, but it's not so much the number of miles per gallon as it is the number of miles per tank of gas.
Anything with a range of less than 400 miles is unacceptable. When I drive on the highway, nothing is more annoying than having to stop at every other rest area to refill the tank.
really?
350 miles would give about 5 hrs of continuous hwy driving, I would think most of us would what to walk a bit after 5 hrs in same chair...
My diesel is good for about 800 miles, but I still stop at about 300 miles.
It really depends where and how long I am driving -
I don't care how many gallons my C63 guzzles (15 mpg HWY) cause I drive it rarely. I am happy with 15 mpg, 13 mpg, 18 mpg.
My TDi has delivered 50-52 mpg every tank since I bought it - obviously, I drive it on my typical 100 mile/day commute. Its rated at 43 HWY and delivers 52 in mixed. I am happy as long as I exceed the 45 mark.
My family bus is a massive GL and I drive it every time we go out with my kid. It delivers 16-17 mpg and I am happy since it also ends up towing stuff and at times, ends up carrying 7 adults.
I have driven a 1993 Geo Prizm LSi 5 speed manual (basically a Corolla) that averaged 32 MPG when I drove it during high school and some of college. It was my first car and my dad gave it to me when I got my license. It already had over 135,000 miles on it and was over 10 years old. It was a pretty decent car though. The 7A-FE engine (found in Celica ST models as well) was fine. Too bad it rusted out and became unsafe to drive half way through college.
I ended up getting a 2008 Honda Civic LX 5 speed. I don't drive much, but since I bought it I've averaged 33.4 MPG.
Not really sure that I have a "breaking point", I understand that different vehicles will get different fuel economy. Obviously, we would all like to get higher MPGs!
We have a 2010 Toyota Tundra CrewMax that averages about 15 MPG but can get up to 18 MPG on the highway. Our 2012 Toyota Highlander averages about 20 MPG in mixed driving but will get up to 25 MPG on the highway. In June I bought a 2014 Ford Fusion Hybrid and my "lifetime" MPG after 2200 miles is sitting at 40 MPG.
It's easy to beat EPA in almost any car (exception perhaps being the ones that are notorious for being overrated, many which later get revised down when the EPA tests them like the Ford hybrids.) I mean, I'm not talking about whacky hypermilers doing 45 on the Interstate or taking 60 seconds to get up to 35 mph and then pulse/gliding and annoying the hell out of everyone. Just typical, conservative driving rather than driving like a jackrabbits.
I had an Charger STR-8 that spent the better part of five miles repeatedly making runs at my tailpipe and slamming on the brakes yesterday. I have no idea where he thought he was going to go since I was following a line of cars on a two-lane highway with a five-foot cement barrier. I think he just enjoyed the sound of his engine (they do sound nice) but I doubt he was getting even 10 mpg.
Most hybrids/diesel small cars (Golf, Cruze, Prius) what not will get 45 easily.
