Please forgive the long post, but I need to make my situation clear.
I'm looking for a car under 30K, new or maybe a year or two old. I'm an old fhart and I like big comfortable cars. I had a 1991 Buick Park Avenue for 20 years and really liked it. I traded it for a Volt(!) and I gotta say, regardless of your political baggage, the Volt is one of the best rides out there. Don't knock it till you've tried it.
Anyway, for various reasons the Volt is no longer practical and I want to go back to big and comfortable. So I test drove a Lincoln MKS and was very disappointed. Mostly by the 6 speed transmission that downshifts at the drop of a hat, accompanied by loud revving engine noises. Coming off a stoplight the thing sounds like it's in a stock car race. Don't care much for Caddy's styling, looks too much like something out of a Road Warrior movie.
So my question is: Are there any cars built in the last few years that are quiet and comfortable like the old land yachts? I dread going from dealership to dealership being subjected to the "car buying experience" over and over to try and find one. I'd rather avoid a SUV, really looking for a sedan. American preferred.
If you liked the Buick you may want to look at the new style LaCrosse. I have a friend with one and was impressed with the ride. The 300C as mentioned is a good option as well, although I am personally not a fan of the Chrysler.
If I was looking for pure luxury sedan and wanted ride quality as primary criteria, I would be looking at last year or two of the Lincoln Town Car. Full body on frame with arguably the best ride of any American made car.
I agree on the Toyota Avalon, and maybe give the Hyundai Azera or Genesis a try too.
The LaCrosse is a nice car, but the base models now come with a 4cyl which you'll probably want to avoid if you hate the constant downshifting. Heck you might even like the new Impala.
I haven't sat in a car for some time that offers comfortable seating for older people. Most have little seat height meaning they are more prone positioning than older cars use to be. I suggest a large SUV if not full size truck. Some of the cheaper foreign model look nice but have terrible road noise. If its closer to ground it will already have more noise and insulation of Toyota and Honda is much better than cheaper cars.
My grandmother has a GMC Acadia and she loves it. Not as huge as a Tahoe, but plenty roomy enough for most people. It's very easy to get in and out of and rides nice and quiet.
Thanks to all for your suggestions, at least it narrows the field, and I will check them out.
I guess the world has just become a noisier place while I was dozing in "Old Buick Land".
