I was driving and thought:

WDH is with all the Z-s?
CR-Z
Z71
XR-Z
BR-Z
Z300

and I am likely missing quite a few. Is this some sort of magic sports related letter?

It's BRZ, not BR-Z, and it means Boxer engine, Rear drive, Zenith.

Z71, is a GM RPO code, which denotes a specific performance package.

Z is a power emblem. You know that is why it was used in swastikas.

Z is a power emblem? References, please. Swastika is ancient sign of sun and purity.

The motif (a hooked cross) appears to have first been used in Neolithic Eurasia, perhaps representing the movement of the sun through the sky.

There was no letter Z in Neolith.

Because Z is sexier then Y and a whole bunch of other letters.
It is at the end of the alphabet, making it the ultimate, the last word or statement, non higher. Nothing larger or better on the food chain.
