Does the ambiguous question mean to permanently improve my ability to apply concentration to any task, or cause me to devote more concentration to the immediate task at hand of shifting?
Because of needing two hands, one for the wheel and one to shift, you won't catch me being a dumbass like others and texting while driving because it's impossible.

This is an excellent reply. MT reduces the risk of texting while driving.
Not only does it improve your concentration, but it reduces stress and it's a lot of fun to drive.
I had a stick 2 years ago. Bought an automatic and hated it. Just leased another 6mt car last week! So much fun. Even in traffic, I don't find it as annoying as driving in traffic with an automatic. Listening to the exhaust roar is calming to me.
When I had an auto, most of my attention went to checking my text and twitter while driving. With the stick, I can't!
I think it makes you more aware of your surroundings and you do concentrate more on the task of driving. To me, automatic isn't driving, it's steering.
So many factors go into what gear you'll select when it comes to standard. Uphill, downhill, traffic conditions, etc. Downshifting, rev matching, etc. To me, all those things make for a true driving experience.
If it were up to me, everyone able bodied would be driving standard. I think we'd see a lot less distracted driving out there. I also believe it would exclude a lot of people from getting a license who probably shouldn't be driving, people who are dangerous on the road.
