So I am currently leasing a 2015 Honda Civic and the right bumper of my car was unfortunately hit in a parking lot the other day. I have no idea who the person who did it was. I waited too long to file a police report, granted I don't know if it would have helped anyhow, so now I have to pay for the damage at some point. I have a $1000 collision deductable under my car insurance. My question is, does it appear that the damage that is done will cost over a grand to fix? Is it something I could fix myself? I know essentially nothing on this subject, but based on looking at the damage of the pics I've provided it appears that it would cost under $1000. There are no visible dents, just scratches and scrapes. The white paint on the car appears that it can wash off easily, as I was able to rub some off with my finger. Any idea on how much this will cost to fix?
A replacement would have to be painted also.
Replacement parts such as this are not already painted.
And with a $1,000.00 deductible. Just go ahead and have it fixed painted if necessary.
Remember, all insurance claims go on record. Forever. This may or may not affect the cost of insurance for you later on. Many/most/all insurance companies have a computer data base with you name and your social security number.
Agreed, a cheap bumper repair place will be in the $300-$500 range. A better shop might be $600-$800 but either way, less than your deductible. It sucks that someone didn't man up to the damage they caused, hopefully they have a costly rash on their vehicle also.
Also go on ebay, local car scap yeards and craigslist and see if anyone is selling a same colored bumper, it is an easy DIY to replace a bumper. Just make sure the replacement is not damaged, has all its mounting tabs still in good shape etc. etc.
A few minutes with a Porter Cable polisher and polish I could have a lot of that gone. Since it's a leased car I'm not sure I'd bother having it painted.
Well, and then they will nab him on repair costs when lease is up.
You sure "someone" did this?
Anyhow. Small scratches will go away with wet or dry sand paper, starting grit 800 and all the way up into 3 000. Kit of such paper is $6 parts stores. I would NOT take a power tool to this, it will go through paint in a heartbeat. You got to have hand gentle to run that curve.
Neighbor does those jobs for about $140. I fixed similar damage to one of my cars myself, GT of about $30. But I know what I'm doing. Spray can of color match paint is $15 plus spray can of clear coat $8 or so plus sand paper. Plus some patience and hand work.
A Porter Cable with the right polish is going to be a lot more gentle than a lay person trying to wet sand it. I'd find a good detailer and have them look at it. Leasing companies expect a car to be returned with a certain level of scuffs. The OP really needs to look at his contract.
Have you tried a quality Polish / Cleaner first, Psyched Out?
It is tough to tell from the pictures but I bet a quality Polish / Cleaner (just follow the directions) from your local Auto Parts Store may amaze you and worth the $5 investment.
It's not bad. I wouldn't fix it now. It's going to happen again. I would wait til you get close to the end of lease to fix it.
Unless it really bothers you.. Try the cheapest way first. Buff it.
