Can anyone explain or even give examples of how much the difference between tagging and paying yearly tag fees in Ga are compared to Virginia? Seems like Va is cheaper EVEN with the personal tax you have to pay...I just paid 387$ to tag my 2001 Suburban in Georgia. I paid 187$ in North Carolina for same vehicle 2 years ago!
Damn. I'm used to paying ~$40/year for registration.
Where at? That's about what Ga used to be. This 387$ was to register it first time and title and special tag etc...still it cost me 287 JUST for the Ad Valorem tax.
You have to know that Georgia includes a one-time 7% Ad-Valorem tax for all new registrations where-as most (every?) other state taxes you year after year after year (with a bottom percent after about 10 years).... First year hit in GA is big, 2nd year on is ~$20 (tag fee).
All calculations say that it takes about 7 years for a Brand New purchase to even out, keep a vehicle longer than that in GA and you'll be ahead of any/every other state. Of course, people average 5 years on a vehicle, so this works out well for GA. :/
Most places I've lived just have a $30-40 annual registration renewal. Have not yet encountered any place that taxes based on value other than the original sales tax transaction.

In Ohio we only pay sales tax when we buy the car. There is zero personal property tax. My plate renewal this year was only $35. Love it.
