Basically, looking to buy a vehicle in the coming month or two, and I've pretty much got it down to two vehicles: An Infiniti M series (2011) or a Mercedes CLS 55 or 63 AMG (2006-2010.)
Price ranges are similar for both, and I've found both with relatively low miles.
I'm not TOO concerned with fuel economy, as long as I can get close to 20MPG.
I know they're vastly different machines, but I'd like to know why you WOULDN'T buy one model versus the other.
If you are rich.......buy the AMG
If you are reasonable.....buy the Infiniti.
An out of warranty 5-10 year old AMG Benz is going to be expensive! I knew a guy that bought a mint CL55, took it to the dealer and they recommended $18,000 in service work (on a car he paid 25K for). It never left that dealer, he traded it on a new leased one.
I've had two Infinitis. Never again. Can't stand them. Unreliable, corner cutting engineering.
The CLS is a better overall vehicle. Be wary of getting a CLS 63 however. Those engines were hand built, and a LOT of owners have had problems with the headbolts not being strong enough for the power output of the 6.2l engine.
You should be looking from 2009 and up, they redesigned the CLS a bit in 2009, newer dash electronics, new steering wheel, different suspension programming, etc. I'm looking for a CLS550 myself.

Look into the AMG 6.2 oil leak issues also.......I saw a CLS400 with thin spoke wheels the other day that was really sharp.

Really? I've owned several Nissans (Maxima and Altima) and aside from the 2004 Maxima I had, always had great experiences with them. I'd hoped Infiniti was a notch above. That's sad to hear.
I guess a CLS550 would be good enough too... I'm attracted to the 63AMG for obvious reasons (flashy, power, etc.) but if it's going to be a headache to own, I might just opt for the 550...

I think your experience is an uncommon one.
The nissan VQ engines you find infinitis are typically very highly regarded.
My '04 G35 did not give me one single problem during the 77K miles I had it for before trading it. Others I know who have infinitis have all had similar experiences.

Those are small engines. Infiniti can't make a decent large engine to save their life.
The 5.6 is their VK V8 series. I've never had the 5.6, but my family and I have had the VK engine in the Q45, M45, and I've cross-shopped the FX45 a couple times now, and been disappointed every time. (Not always just with the engine, but as an overall package.)
They are typically down on power compared to competitors, and I personally think they are one of the worst among Asian brands for their engineering. We had several things fail on our sedans, and being that I'm a DIY kind of guy, seeing how they did things in some cases was just ridiculous and made no sense.

I don't agree with this statement but even if it were true its becoming less and less relevant with each passing year given industry trends.
