The problems with the Ford Crown Victoria caught national headlines more than ten years ago. The chance the car could catch on fire after being rear-ended drove a lot of departments to get rid of the cars. And eventually Ford decided to just stop making them.
Well OK, I read it. Ford may or may not be responsible for the Crow Vic fire problem. However, this was still the main reason many departments stopped buying this vehicle. Maybe, they just wanted new SUV's and used this as an excuse.
Dodge chargers are trooper cars in Montana & Wyoming.
I would assume these 2 states would have ran out of Crown Victoria's quickly because these 2 states have a large land mass which mean their cars would hit over 125,000 miles in only a few years.
Since Ford stop making the Crown Victoria in 2011, many police departments have been slowly getting rid of their Crown Victoria's and been buying the Ford Taurus, Dodge Charger, Ford Explorer, Chevy Tahoe, etc. There's still quite a few of them around but not as many as there were 5 years ago. There are still police departments that have their fleet at 30% Crown Victoria's but eventually they'll get rid of them. Most of the ones still in service have 80,000+ miles. Crown Victoria's will always be around but they won't be in use for law enforcement forever. I've been noticing less and less on them on the road for the last few years and it's quite sad to be honest. The Crown Victoria always seemed like the perfect cop car and had a authoritarian look. I'm not a fan of the soccer mom Ford Explorers.
When will Cops stop driving the Crown Vic's as Patrol Cars? Detective and Undercover? Does your department still have them?
More LEOs swear by them, rhan not, so probably until they need to be retired, which is about 200k miles- think.

Every department is different. The town next to me retires cars at 150,000 miles and my department retires them at 125,000. My department still has a lot of them. I know the Kansas State Police retires them at 49,500 so they can sell them to other agencies that need good solid cars. Kansas got rid of their last Crown Victoria in April 2015 so if they're selling them at 49,500 to other departments then those cars are still around.
For as long as I can remember Ford has always built dedicated police vehicles that were not available to the public.
I remember in 1961 Ford had Galaxy police cruisers with a 390 CI 330 HP with solid lifters. This engine was not available to the public. The 375 HP engines available to the public was not in the police cruisers.
Except for about 92-01, or somewhere along that, that one could order a p71 Vic.
