thanks guys! Well I dont need to go 80; I do not even like going that fast on my lexus. 70 mph though is just enough for people not to go insane on the highway and giving you the finger ha ha!
Anyhow, I am actually looking at a dodge ram w250 1985 which I REALLLLY love the body style, but I was wondering if that can go 70 mph no problem? it is a 4 speed and yes I will change all the worn parts of course!

I had a 72 f250 with the 300 6 cylinder, really low gearing in the rear. Top speed was about 60ish, anything past that and you were really pushing it. You had to be careful with that truck in first gear or reverse because if you thumped on the gas you were going to start breaking stuff. That said you never used first unless you had an abnormally heavy load. Wasn't going to win any drag races but would certainly race anyone up a hill towing a 10K pound trailer.
If you are looking to pull stuff and find a Ford with the 300 don't let the 6 cylinder throw you off, it's better than many 8's for torque.

What is the axle ratio?
Do check this, I had a 1984 W250 that was 4:11 (not good for speed or economy), 3:55 would be fine.. Keep looking if ratio is too low geared. A W250 has frt and rear diff, so would cost a bundle to change.
Under Jimmy Carter the speed limits were dropped to 55 (even though no one did 55). Before that the speed limits were 65-70 and in some open western states even higher than that. If I recall Montana didn't even have one during the daylight hours.
Trucks kept up just fine.
Your question should be "will an old worn out truck keep up with 70mph traffic"? To that question I would say it would but it's not a wise thing to do with so many more cars on the road today.
One serviced and in good shape will go more than fast enough to get your drivers license suspended over time. Starting in the 50's sustained 65-70 was common place. I drove a (well sorted out) 1954 Chevy as a daily driver for a couple years not long ago. 235 6cyl. 2 speed powerglide. 4 wheel drum brakes. It kept up on the interstates just fine.
My 79 T-Bird cruises all day at 80 with no problems. My 74 Montego takes a good set at 90-100 and doesn't sound strained at all. Even my 76 Pinto had no problem doing 75 without getting tempermental. And that was with the old agricultural grade 2.3 spinning 3300 rpm's. You'll be fine.
The IDI Ford Diesels the Cummins 6BT Rams and the Gasser Big Block 454 Chevy's are all pretty quick depending on gearing heck the Chevy SS 454 and First Gen SVT Ford Lightning
