I echo what others say about the HF jacks. My brother has one that is about 10 years old, no issues. I have two of them. One low profile jack for my lowered car. And a larger one for my truck. Great jacks
I have this set from Craftsman, it's about 10 years old now and still going strong. I added a set of slightly taller jack stands for working on the wife's Jeep and use poly ramps for my GLI since it is so low to the ground the jack cannot fit under the car. But it still serves it's purpose and having a creeper is nice.
What's even better is my neighbor who lets me use his lift
If you have a local Harbor Freight I recommend stopping in there. After seeing a local tire shop using nothing but Harbor Freight jacks I purchased one.
I've used this jack for several years, it's excellent for the price. It can be had with coupon for $79-$85 IIRC. I recommend this one because of the lower profile of it.
At the same time purchase the six ton jack stands they have there, I recommend six ton because they are quite a bit taller than the two or three ton ones and it greatly improves access.
We have about 6 jacks in our shop and the worst one is a $300 Craftsman jack that my Son bought me for my Birthday. It leaked and settled down on it's own after I owned if for a few months, and Sears would not replace it. They said their "lifetime warranty" is only on hand tools, not jacks !
The best jacks we have are from Harbor Freight. We have two 4 ton jacks and two 3 ton ones from them, and they are great. Built like a tank, safe, and they never have leaked a drop. You can find them on sale for $89 to $129 most times too. Forget the aluminum ones, buy the big old heavy cast iron ones, they last forever and are much more steady when the car is up on them.
Because of Sears getting so crappy with their service, I rarely go there for anything these days.
Thanks so much! Harbor Freight for the win! I got the 3 ton steel jack and 6 ton jack stands. Both together were on sale for $150. I had no idea about the jack stands - so glad I asked!
Good call, and much safer that way. Some people are down on Harbor Freight, saying their stuff is Chinese crap, and a certain percentage is. However, a lot of their tools are really not bad for the money, and a lot cheaper than lots of other places. We buy their drill bits and find that they last as long as the more expensive ones sold in other stores. I also have one of their 12 inch disc grinders and it is probably 10 years old and gets used a lot.
You will be very happy with your jack and jack stands.
