What's the deal with early lease termination offers?

There's rarely ever a lease to own that is worth it once you factor total cost of lease and then paying off the residual amount. If so, nobody would finance a purchase.

Yeah but those rare cases are examples like a Toyota in this market where used cars are commanding higher prices than they expected when the residual was set.

Very true, thanks to the strong used market for Toyotas, I was able to trade in my leased 2014 Highlander over a year early and walked away with $1500 in my pocket. I didn't lease a new vehicle either, my local dealer (not where I leased it from, either) purchased it outright-- paid the 'buyout' and cut me a check.
