Yes, my dad is making the mistake of keeping his BMW near 100K (95K now). Things just started popping up in the last few months. And these are expensive fixes.
And mine has 160k miles on it now and I've spent the last year daily driving it with no need for repairs. I fully intend to drive it well past 200k.

Good for you. I can only speak of my personal experience. My family has owned mostly japanese cars and beyond basic maintenance they have had no issues. First foray into BMW and we get this. I understand it's a small sample size but makes me very hesitant to try them again.
I like German cars, their styling, and engineering (albeit over-engineered). They are the best looking cars on the road. Their engines never break down, it's seems like just everything else does.
If I'm not mistaken the e46 sedan was replaced with e90 in 2004-5. So, yes, 12+ year old cars do have problems.
