Greetings,
I'm thinking of trading in my used car for an SUV. However, I am having some trouble compiling a list of small, compact SUV's as there doesn't really seem to be any. Most SUV's to me seem medium-sized or larger and most brand new ones seem positively huge. However, I don't want or need a big (or even medium-sized) SUV. Not even close. All I need is just a small, compact one that gets reasonably decent fuel mileage. Since no automakers seem to currently make one that I like, I was trying to think of some old ones that might still be driveable and with some life left in them still within the last, say, 20 years or so. Any help you might provide in helping me come up with some different makes, models and years of such an SUV would be very helpful.
Thank you
Jeep Liberty. The 2008+ models are very nice. The 2011 and 2012 models have the nicest interiors. The models older than 2008 look a bit quirky but I liked mine. They are built like a true SUV with RWD/4WD.
I owned both a 2004 and later a 2011 model. My dad still drives the 2004 with over 200k miles. I traded the 2011 in on a newer car at around 130k miles. Never had any major issues on the 2004. The 2011 had nothing done besides routine maintenance. They were both great in snow.
Are you talking like a blazer, explorer, Saturn vue, Toyota rav4, Isuzu rodeo & amigo, jeep, Suzuki samurai, geo tracker?
Not so much Blazer or Explorer or Jeeps (too thirsty and unrefined)
more like Saturn Vue, Toyota Rav4, Isuzu Rodeo, Isuzu Amigo, and Chevrolet Tracker, (the bigger, 4-door, more on-road oriented version, not the little two-seat more off-road oriented version)
the Suzuki Samurai, although I like it, it's too off-road oriented for everyday on-road driving comfort
I guess I'm looking for something somewhat more on-road oriented rather than off-road oriented

What kind of gas mileage do you get on paved roads in the city and on the highway?

I had a 2000 Honda CR-V that had a manual transmission and I routinely got 33 mpg. That model is nice because it is one of the few SUV's built on a car, not a truck chassis. No more manual trans after 2006.

Well, some of today's compact SUVs have grown in size but their previous generations were small : CRV, RAV, Rogue, Sportage , XL7
Not sure why you want a compact SUV but look to see whether hatchbacks might work for you: Matrix/Vibe, Impreza, Golf, Mazda 3
