I currently have a 2008 Ford Fusion SE with the standard 4-cyclinder engine and an automatic transmission and all the usual, standard, SE-level equipment. This car has only 43,000 miles on it.
I was considering trading it straight across for a small Crossover/SUV of the same or similar value, with, say, no more than about $1,000 to $2,000 difference in cash exchanging hands to make up for any perceived difference on either side of the transaction.
Having said all this, what kind of small Crossover/SUV should I consider trading for (i.e. year, make, model, engine, transmission, mileage, etc.)...

The SUV/Crossover holds it's value a lot better than the sedan. The Fusion is a great, reliable car, but keep in mind that dealers are there to make money, and would most likely offer no more than low Bluebook, $4,500 in your case. Retail, which they would try to sell it for would be about $10,000. You are much better off selling it yourself and taking the cash to buy the SUV. With only the trade-in you would be looking at a same year and mileage Kia Sportage, Saturn Vue, or Hyundai Santa Fe, or much older (2000-2003) Blazer, Subaru Forester, Honda CRV or Toyota RAV4. Finding SUVs that old with such low miles would be like a needle in a Haystack. My recommendation for what to try for, in order of preference based on comparable or better quality/reliability to your Fusion would be:
I would be cautious about pre-2005 or so Subarus because that put you into the era when they were prone to head gasket issues. They're not a terminal issue for the vehicle- most people otherwise love their Forrester/Outback/Impreza so they fix and keep them going- but is it something to be aware of if you're interested in the brand.
why not keep the fusion it has low miles and that generation produced a very good/solid car unless you ate looking for AWD/4x4 then may want to look at the same generation Ford Escape
