I was shopping for new tires and was comparing Michelin Defender LTX M/S and Michelin Premier LTX. The premier was about $6 more, but the tread depth in the LTX = 10.5 and Premier = 8.5

Tread depth is not what affects the longevity of tires, it's the rubber compounds used and tread design. The all-season have better winter traction, while the high performance tires are stickiest in dry weather. I recently changed from the Michelin Pilot Supersport to the Latitude Touring on my Challenger, because it was hard to keep the rears from spinning going up hills in the rain. They still had plenty of tread at 28,000 miles.
