Just venting here. I'm sick of seeing these skinny (rubber band) tires stretched over oversized rims. I'm not talking about Donks and Lowriders etc... those have no hope. I'm referring to new "vintage/retro" styled muscle cars and pick up trucks in general. What has become of these wheels??? Just look at this atrocity...

What happened to the days when wheels looked like this?

I always thought it looked rather dumb to pit car rims on a truck, and truck rims on a car.

It's the "kids" with the beater car. Faded paint. Rust. Torn faded cracked interior.

Then they put $2,000 worth of fancy rims and large wood/vinyl speakers in the rear.

Was @Exotics at RTC yesterday (weekly summer car show) looking at an older AMC Javelin someone had brought into the 21st Century with a modern Ford engine of some kind plus tastefully-done modern wheels. And, a well-done paint job that looked a lot like Pepper Gray.

Coincidentally someone brought an "Eleanor" GT500 to the show, too. Didn't ask for details on that one, some are actual titled 1967 GT500s, others carefully built replicas, but it surely was gorgeous with a clearly modern engine...looked a lot like a 5.0 Liter Ford Coyote, but I'm not an engine expert. Eleanor's are definitely a modern twist

Nothing you listed is an "atrocity," it's a free forum and we'll disagree there. In fact that c. late 1960s light colored truck in the picture seems gorgeous. Friend of mine had a 1964 Chevy truck, a very popular platform for street racer truck upgrades there in the Central Valley (CA). I wish he'd thrown about $15K at it to do just that, as the stock look was shall we say less-than-stellar: just some old excrement-laying farm vehicle, like many thousands of-same from Redding to the Imperial Valley.

Also a frequent at the above mentioned show is a Porsche 944 from early-mid 1980s. The owner replaced the OEM rims with 18" Porsche 996 Turbo wheels, I had the latter car and know them well. Not *quite* how I would have handled it, but it did bring a 1980s car into a 2000's look. No other obvious mods I noted.

Wheels are low-hanging fruit to bring a car or truck more up to date as a modern classic. I've done-same to my 2007 Tacoma XRunner, along with various other mods. I'm not interested in driving dated old @#$%.

OEM/originals have their place, and a *lot* of fans. Hey, power to 'em (you) or whatever.

I've always found OEM hubcaps to be nice looking on a car. When it comes to tires, I prefer 4 season tires.

I don't think that's the point of this thread. None of the OP's examples are $2K cars. I believe the OP was aluding to buying a car (can be relatively new or not) and then "ruining" it with unattractive wheels.

The cost relationship of wheels/car isn't really the point.

My opinion...everyone has different tastes.

What cracks me up is when someone puts those offset rims with rubber band tires on their truck, then complain about how their new truck doesn't handle worth a damn. Had that happen when I worked at Dodge years ago. Kid brought in his new truck complaining about how it was all over the road and hard to control. Screaming this truck is junk and wanted his money back. Walked out to the truck, and he had put some of the stupidest offset rims and little tiny tires on it. I laughed and said "what did you expect?"
It was like riding in a go-cart!

I dislike the skinny tires for a number of reasons. I also dislike painted rims. The black murdered-out look is popular these days but I still prefer the look of chrome. My Camaro is a 2015 but I put some LS7 Concept Camaro rims on it as shown in the picture. They were hard to fine (and expensive) but with the raked stance it looks great.
