I did this when I was that age (long ago). turned out it was easiest for us to just buy a semi beater car and then sell it. We pooled student loan $ and bought something decent we knew we could resell. It was a risk, but worked out OK.
I would just buy a crappy car and go down there. I say this because y'all being around 22 and not having car insurance in your name sounds pretty bad to me sorry. I had car insurance in my name at 16 years old.

Or they're just out of college. I was on my parent's insurance during college and until the policy needed to be renewed.
The under 25 surcharge is usually about $20-30/day. One-way rental will probably run $70-$100/day so it's steep but split three ways it's $10/day which isn't the end of the world. Rentals might be less there. Someplace they really have to have these $29/day cars you can rent, it's just not anywhere I've ever been. Maybe it's Ohio. Old jalopy isn't a terrible idea either, just depends if you really want to make it or not. If it's more about the journey than the destination, the old jalopy could definitely be more of an experience.
I haven't rented one in most states. Every state I've tried to rent a car in under 25 (California, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, New York) I haven't had an issue.
Have you called any car rental agencies? I was thinking that most don't rent to those under 25. I do know that my ex-SIL had a difficult time renting a U-haul truck when in his early 20s but was somehow able to get one for a move.
Wrong. It really isn't hard, it just costs a little extra money. If you google around a bit, you might find a few coupon codes. That is what I did when my car was in the shop unexpectedly and I had to get back to campus.

Figure out how much money it costs and then split it 3 ways? I mean thats pretty much all there is to it....I guess if you cant afford that then tough luck?
I rented from Hertz more times than I can remember, and I'm only 24. They just charge a small "underage driver" fee. If you're military, they waive the fee, which is convenient.
I agree with buying an older cheap car. I'd look for an old Corolla that still has working air conditioning. The A/C may die during the trip, but the car probably won't.
I've bought old Corollas and Camrys that had around 200K miles on them and drove them for several years before selling them and they were still running. The A/C is the first thing that died, but the cars kept going.
I rented cars before I was 25 and don't remember having issues but I had insurance and a credit card.
With that said, I second the buy a beater recommendation. Unexpected breakdowns can add to the road trip experience .
Good luck and New Mexico is a great state to explore.
