I am moving across states, and driving a lot of stuff. My car is packed to the brim and rather have my back window packed with debris, I would like to put up a sunshade so that it looks neater to the person behind me. The issue is I only have one which appears to be reflective? Though I'm not sure how much light it really does reflect, as I've never experienced a glare from it or anything- it's certainly not any kind of actual metallic material.

My question is: can I drive with said sunshade in my back window? Will it in any way reflect light or obstruct other motorists? And would it be something that could get me in trouble in any way (I already know blocking the rear window is fine)

Depends. Just in case, I'd get one that can be seen through by the driver but doesn't reflect light.

^you can block your rear window and it's completely fine so long as you can see clearly with both your side mirrors. It's the same way truckers navigate

That is exactly right. Look at cargo vans, too...they don't
have side windows either in back...just don't have that shiny mylar stuff.

Now why would you just post something that is so blatantly incorrect? You do realize that there are vans and such that have no rear windows right?

So long as you have working side mirrors, you're fine.

I'm not disputing that it is legal to block the center rear view mirror, but comparing it to a van with no rear window, is an apples and oranges comparison. Vans with no rear window have larger side mirrors to compensate. Just saying.

To the OP, why not get a nonreflective sunshade for the back window?

In general, the law is that so long as you have 2 side view mirrors, one on each side of the vehicle, that allow a view at least 200ft behind.. It's legal.

However.. I would question the legality of a reflective sunshade. There could be issues there with blinding drivers behind you. So.. Safety.. I'd go with a non-reflective.

Just a simple question ...
Are both sides *reflective* or just one side ?
My *sunshades* (used when parking) are shiny on one side flat black on the other !

As one poster mentioned. (a slight bit different) how about some scrap card board pieces ?

*You* said it ...
<<so that it looks neater to the person behind me>>

LBNL
*Packed to the brim* !
Make darn sure, you can see you right rear view mirror clearly !

Jeez. Really?

Vans have much larger mirrors & truckers...well that an entirely different league.

IMO, a reflective shade AND blocking the view out the back is a bad idea on a long trip. So a nope from me.
