My 3 boys have all learned how to drive manuals. Right now 2 of the 3 are driving 5 speed VW Jettas, and I'm driving a 6 speed Audi A4. Sometimes if I switch up between the cars I forget if I'm driving the 5 speed or 6 speed, but overall I prefer the 6.

Isn't that the same configuration as in a 5-Speed? At least I have never driven any car where it was not.

3-4 is always straight up and down in the middle. Just the location of R can vary (sometimes left, sometimes right).

Doesn't look like the middle to me. What I mean is 3 and 4 line up with neutral.

Everything from a 3 speed to a 13 speed. Oh, and an old truck with a 5 speed main and a 4 speed brownie that was 22 years ago.

Two of our three cars are manual, as are my three m'cycles...
I taught both of our kids to drive, initially on a manual, back in the late '70s.

Default grasping "the concept" of a manual shift

In Calgary I was driving a Mazda with a manual transmission. If I didn't BOLT off the start at the change of light I'd get newer drivers banging on their horn wondering why I wasn't immediately on the move. Mazda's had an overbuilt Teflon tranny but getting into the gears cleanly was problematic sometimes.

One particular car here dad was in the passenger seat, and when I made my right turn calmly noted through the window that I was driving a manual. I left the explanation to him.

Manual cars are actually more fun to drive than automatics. It takes some coordination to do it
Not in the circumstance the average Joe and Jane drive cares in. The auto is less tiresome in everyday traffic.

3rd and 4th are in line with neutral in 5 and 6 speeds.

First gear on a manual pickup truck is called the creeper gear only use it when towing, I always used 2 gear to start out in on my F150 5 speed 4.9 straight 6 motor, that was one great motor all iron block.

The only time they don't line up with the centerline is if reverse is where 1st normally is. I'm not a fan of that pattern It's also really, really rare
