There is a configuration called "dog leg first" that does not have 3-4 straight down

Never driven one personally so can't comment on the experience.

yes and good in bad weather. I've never owned an automatic.

My wife, 22 y/o son and I all own cars with manual transmissions.

Out of six cars, one is an automatic.

I replaced the 3 speed column shifter in my '70 Impala with a four on the floor.

Your friend and his wife are lucky because there is an incident in which a car jacker killed the owner of the car because he was mad he could not drive it away...

Back in high school my buddy's girlfriend taught me how to drive in her old Ford Falcon with a "3 on the knee" manual transmission. I drove manuals for about 20 years until I bought my first "luxury car' in the 80's. I love manual sports cars and have almost always had one as a second car. My current Porsche is a 6 speed. I rarely see 6th gear because if I do, I'm going WAY over the speed limit.
