Volkswagen, BMW, then Mercedes Benz. Get under the hood, learn to drive, then enjoy the largest German sedan you can afford.

Volkswagen- bland, boring, overpriced.
BMW - unreliable
MB - disappointing test drives
Audi - too much technology

End result, stuck with non-luxury japanese. Fun to drive and saved thousands and thousands and thousands.....

Default Greman cars

Buy a '65 Beetle new. Keep the rust away and drive it forever. Wish we did.

What makes MB a progression from BMW? They are basically equivalent luxury brands, aimed at slightly different buyers.

Eventually tastes mature to the point your happy just looking over a big ol' hood with an raised emblem that reminds of the name that invented the petrol motorcar. Can't be a flyboy forever.

Look, I am a guy that actually buys and owns these brands.

In my opinion, the Mercedes Benz is a better built and engineered vehicle compared to BMW.

That said, BMW is a FINE automobile!

Now, V.W.= P.O.S. a poor excuse for a vehicle from anywhere, let alone Germany.

In the past I have expressed the opinion that people who DON'T OWN one of these vehicle, will loudly state the opinion that they READ in a magazine review, of how they are built poorly, and prone to failure. Yada-yada-yada.

Like Packard used to advertise..."ask the man who owns one".

Mercedes Benz has a very high return customer rate.

Why?

Because current owner like them and will replace their older models with new when the time comes.

After all....doesn't that kind of say it all.

Now anticipating the frequently stated argument of "well it's just affluent people attempting to buy status....

Allow me to state, that no one throws away money.

People buy them and return BECAUSE...they like them.

Proper progression:

1. Think about buying a German car.
2. Do some research on pricing and maintenance costs.
3. Run away screaming.

There are some really great German cars but I don't think my financial sense will ever tolerate one.

I've had over 30 custom VWs both aircooled and water cooled, and an Audi, as well as a handful of BMWs. I doubt I'll ever own a Mercedes, (though an '80s 560 SEC might be fun). I'm on the lookout for another BMW right now, a 2001 E38 7 series to replace my last 7 series.

I do see a progression up from VW to Audi, or from VW to BMW or from VW to Mercedes, but not necesarily from VW to BMW to Mercedes.

Much more eloquently stated, thank you.

And my 1st "german" car was a Porsche. Own a VW now. Never owned an Audi. At this rate, I'm regressing to what, pre teen years?
