Hey all,

As the title of the thread states, what are some unexpectedly good gas mileage numbers you've been able to achieve with a car that isn't supposed to hit such numbers?

I recently went on a trip from Seattle to San Francisco w/my '06 Mazda 2 2.3 liter 5-speed. I normally get around 27-28 mpg mixed city/highway driving with it. On this trip, I somehow got about 37-38 mpg out of it! (On trips to Portland, it's gotten around 32-34). Granted, this was with few stops over a long distance, but there was a lot of mountain driving (using lower gears up and down steep hills), and I was using A/C most of the time.

Let's hear some numbers! (I'm especially curious to hear what people have been able to pull off w/V8 sport/pony cars, or trucks over a long distance).

Good gas mileage? LOL

None of our vehicles get good gas mileage, but I was surprised that our ML63 (5.5liter twin turbo) is getting better gas mileage than our old Porsche Cayenne S (4.5 liter NA engine.) We're getting about 17 mpg with the ML63 and usually got 15 with the Cayenne. Considering the performance is so much better with the ML, I was shocked it is more efficient too.

Rental car, a Ford Focus, averaged 34 mpg on a round trip between the Front Range of CO and Anacortes, WA. Best for that trip was 37 mpg on rural highways, worst was 27 in urban areas.

The car pulled to one side, had tires that needed balancing, and smelled like leaky coolant. Also, someone must have put animal guts and/or worse stuff in the trunk, because it stank. I saw what looked like blood stains in the trunk. Worst rental ever, for those reasons. The car itself would have been nice without those problems.

Wonder what it would have gotten for mpg if it had been in good condition and had a manual transmission.
