My car is in the shop, and one person suggested I NOT get any rides from them, as they may do something like charge $10 per trip. I've had that shop do work before, and they never took payment from me upon riding in their vehicle (nor the past few days). The invoice never listed those either. He said they may secretly tack on such charges. Well, in that case, it seems like that's part of the "whole operations cost".
For example, when I get a restaurant bill, I'm sure the bill also covers stuff like to wash dishes, and other expenses. Yet, it's not like it's a separate item I could opt out of anyways, so I'm not sure what he was getting at.

I ended up renting a car as the place opens up after I'm supposed to be at work (and not reliable anyways being short staffed), it's still cheaper than using PTO, and a plus is I can also go out and to other stuff around town. Otherwise, anybody hear something like this?

I only have basic knowledge of internals of cars, but even if I did, it's not like I have that much of choice. Prices aren't going to be the best, but they're generally the same around town.
One mechanic shop near my work (large office park area) has a sign out front specifically advertising free rides to/from your workplace while your car is being serviced. A shop I'm familiar with (I know the owner) would probably laugh if someone asked for a ride. Each business is going to be different depending on what they want to do.
My mechanic (and the one in that shop before him) have given me rides home (it's not far). He said he otherwise will pay Uber a couple of dollars to do so. (I don't believe he would add that on).

My long term repair garage ( I have been a customer there for over 30 years ) keeps a couple of compact used cars to be used as loaners by customers. No charge, just put gas in it before you bring it back. The shop does charge a flat rate of $10 per job for shop supplies, that includes nut bolts and screws, hinge lube, oil and coolant top ups, and fuses as needed. And seat covers and fender covers , and hand cleaner and hand wipers.
