China is the world's biggest automotive market. When they ban both gasoline and diesel engines, the electric car will reach a tipping point.

I expect this to happen within 10 years.

China looks at plans to ban petrol and diesel cars - BBC News

China made 28 million cars last year, almost a third of the global total.
Both the UK and France have already announced plans to ban new diesel and petrol vehicles by 2040, as part of efforts to reduce pollution and carbon emissions.

Chinese-owned carmaker Volvo said in July that all its new car models would have an electric motor from 2019.

10 years? Even France and Britain are talking at least 20 and they're a fraction of the size. China's economy would collapse if they dumped every fossil fuel powered vehicle in such a short timespan.
The world's lithium and cobalt reserves would cease to exist after the mad dash to rip them out of the earth in less than a decade. Battery prices would sky rocket, leaving the rest of the world to fall back on fossil fuels. China would rapidly chain themselves to the limits of electric vehicles before the technology is ready to sustain it.
It could quite possibly be the best thing to happen to America economically speaking as our production and shipping would have no constraints.

We'd basically enjoy the same advantages China held over us 20 years ago.
