NEW YORK -- The rally in energy prices gained momentum Friday, with retail gas prices rising further into record territory and diesel and heating oil futures setting records of their own amid concerns about strong global demand and tight supplies.

Diesel is well over 4 bucks a gallon here now. While diesel cars may be more fuel-efficient, I can't imagine they're more cost-effective per mile than their petrol counterparts.

Yeah - what is UP with the diesel prices? The price disparity will thwart the manufacturers who have thought to create diesels for this country for sure.

Ultra Low Sulfur, that's what's up with diesel prices.

We might not buy diesel...but we sure buy it when we buy bread, milk, petrol, cloths...blah blah on and on.

That's true. But...the cost is likewise passed on to the consumer....high gas and diesel prices are killing all of us...in higher costs of food and other commodities...

One of my part time second jobs is driving a school bus. I filled up today. Price was 4.07 (Northeast FL). Total = 164.00. I feel like I am playing a video game when I fill up. This time I beat my own personal best of 146.00.

The bus got 6.8 mpg. It carries 30-40 high school kids 5 days a week at 60 miles a day round trip. Its a strange feeling filling up at that price. It will be interesting to see where the prices go. I know ultra low diesel has to be some factor in the price but diesel prices were high before the change over---I should say...higher than they should be considering what diesel is. The only way diesel will become a cost effective alternative for consumers and drivers here in the US is if the price becomes more competitive with regular unleaded gas instead of consistently pricing in the premium or higher price range. Oh..and a decent selection of relatively affordable diesel engine cars may also help.
