I've tried them all over the last decade or so with cars with the cabin filter, now I just buy the cheapest one they have in the store and install it (usually takes 5 mins). Every time I change it out, it's filthy, so it obviously works.
My experiements with HEPA and odor filters netted no improvement really. I have allergies...and even with $50 fancy pants filters, I was still sneezing.
That’s probably because your evaporator has mold and junk on the surface. That’s where the outside air gets cooled to go in your car. Most people don’t know that your evaporator needs periodic cleaning. Which is a relatively easy and cheap process
I have a current generation Outback. I just buy the Denso filter on Amazon for $10.00. Denso is the supplier to Toyota and Subaru so it's identical to the OEM filter. In my car, the filter is in the glove box. After I've emptied all the debris out of the glove box, it takes about 30 seconds to replace. I just do it in my driveway every summer.
I've never had a car where I had to clean the evaporator. I suspect it's because I live in a place with a real winter so I have quite a few months of cold/low humidity with the heat cranked.
i buy charcoal filters from rockauto for our car since we have a dog, sometimes eat fast food and we get forest fires up here i save enough vs buying retail i can get these otherwise expensive filters i change them out yearly
