well... it IS very (most) popular among gay men (Fiat has tried to curtail that image)
But I know of 4 gals (no guys) who own Fiat 500's, cuz they eagerly awaited the release, and thought they were very 'cute' .
Mini Cooper, just the opposite... 4 guys, no gal owners. Tesla (2) of each (2 guys / 2 gals), but they are all mechanical engineers, so... did not buy for 'class' / self identification.
In no particular order:
1. Toyota Prius
2. VW Beetle
3. Mini Cooper( 40ish ladies trying to be 20ish)
4. Smart car( old ladies who got taken trying to be frugal)
4. Fiat 500 ( college girls)
5. Chevy Spark( actual frugal old ladies with no kids or grandkids )
6. Cadillacs( rich old ladies)
7. Acura SUVs ( well off soccer moms)
8. BMW SUVs ( very well off soccer moms)
9. Convertibles in general( I agree with previous statement)
10. Honda Elements( aged hippy ladies with dogs) Subaru Foresters would be tied in this particular category
The Kia Soul? That is a squared off little Tonka Truck car and girls don't play with Tonkas or Hot Wheels( sexism, yeah!). I'll let it go at being an old peoples car or would be if they could get past its squared off shape that is nothing sedan like. It does have many features older drivers would find appealing, but they probably think its a young persons car which is how it was marketed. Its puts the Smart Car and The Chevy Spark to shame in that class.
Why did Miata become such a popular car with hairdressers? I always thought of it as a car for Weaboos for some reason to be honest.
I think the term "hairdresser car" is simply used to suggest something like "style over substance" or a sporty convertible that isn't as high performance as it's exterior suggests. Really questionable in many people's mind if it is fair to label the Miata as such. The original
Audi TT convertible was also widely labeled as such.
"Chick car??"
What would you super-macho guys say about an elderly man who owns a Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins truck, 2 Kawasaki brute force atvs, a 32 foot motorhome, is a licensed Amateur Radio Operator...
and owns a PT Cruiser convertible.
Or, how about a middle-aged man who owns a Ram 2500 Cummins truck, a highly modified Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, a Vintage Honda 110, is also a licensed Amateur Radio Operator,
and owns a Suzuki Bergman 650
and owns a Jeep Grand Cherokee.
IMO, there are no "chick cars". There are merely pseudo-macho "men", under testosterone overload, who feel the need to label things as "not macho" or "feminine".

I always thought of it as a car for people who like convertibles. -_-
