I own a 2013 Honda Fit Sport. Purchased new, it delightfully gifted me with 30/city and 38-44 mpg highway! Now I'm lucky to get 29-33 mpg on the highway. Tires are rotated every 5k and check air pressure every month. Faithfully service the car when the maintenance light goes on, get oil changes (which is done at the dealership with the required oil) and replace engine air filter every oil change. I replace my own air cabin filter - which I don't think has anything to do with gas mileage? There's only 35K on the car, as I telecommute.

What are some things I can do restore my gas mileage? What could be happening? Thanks for your help.

How are you determining gas mileage?

Pour into the gas tank a can of Seafoam engine cleaner. It'll clean out the gunk in the engine and improve your gas mileage. I use it annually and my mileage increased from 24-25mpg to 29-30 mpg on the highway.

1) check your wheels or hubcaps for any excess brake dust...you might have a dragging brake.
2) does your car drive straight with your hands off the wheel?
3) check for uneven tire wear.
4) check your exhaust tip and see if there's excess soot, if so you're running rich or burning excess fuel or oil.
5) check your 4 spark plugs for corrosion or damage.
6) use some fuel injection cleaner (Techron costs about $6 for a bottle).
7) check O2 sensors and MAF sensors. Some cars can operate in limp mode by disconnecting the MAF harness. If your car performs better in limp mode, you probably have a MAF sensor issue.

If you feel like your engine is in good shape, maybe give it an "Italian tune-up." If you don't rev it up or put the car under load from time to time, it has a tendency to build up carbon on the valves...especially on direct injection motors.

Same thing happened to me. It's a 05 Chevy Malibu. Within a weeks time the power steering went out and I bought new tires. I've tracked calculated MPG since I bought it with 44k on it. Put it all in a spreadsheet. After that week there was an 11% drop in MPG. Tens of thousands of miles have been traveled in it. New low rolling resistance tires, new wheel bearings, new O2 sensor. Alignment checked, Nothing helped. I suspect when Chevy fixed the power steering free they altered the engine programming. At 135k some loss of MPG can be attributed to high mileage. I can still get 30-32 on a pure highway drive but I used to get up to 35. Had an indicated 37 on the dash display

You might be getting lower gas mileage because your local gas supply may have added more ethanol. Sticker on the pump says ' contains up to 10%' You might now be getting the full 10% I was getting a consistent 34-35 mpg. I now get 31-32 mpg.
