A friend of mine had a Jeep Scrambler, which was pretty good for what he wanted: hauling stuff, but not too much. It was like a pickup version of a CJ and it was definitely fun.
Ultimately it wasn't big enough to do one of the biggest jobs he needed to do, which was to plow out his road every time it snowed, so he wound up moving up to an F150 (I think). I bet he still misses that little Scrambler, though.
I always wanted a pickup car, but they're not common enough on the used car market to get down to my price range. Now even the pickup trucks are becoming overpriced garbage.
