They are a novelty. If they share components from the new JL it will suffer quality issues. The JL looks great, but it has reliability issues and a bunch of small issues that a 45k-50k vehicle should not have.
Not a fraternity bro but I sure do like my $55k Wrangler. I do get lost on the way to the mall sometimes though. All the miles I've spent driving to the malls and 0 reliability or quality issues. No problems with our Jeep Grand Cherokee either. My old JK Rubicon only ever saw the dealer for regular maintenance. Not one issue there either.

So, tell me just how this is different from all the other 4 door trucks with tiny vestigial beds out back, except that this one says "Jeep" on it.
Sorry, unless I can get a 4 x 8 sheet of plywood flat in the bed, I am not interested and would just as soon use a minivan with the seats out.
Oh, wait, I was being foolish and considering the use of a truck to actually haul things in a useful way. Silly me. Of course, I should trade in my comfortable four door sedan that can carry four to five people in comfort at 100 mph, for a rough riding unreliable "truck-y" vehicle with evil handling, but that isn't actually useful for actual truck usage, so that I can say "I have a truck!"
It's a lot of cash for what's best suited not as a daily driver or a work vehicle, but a recreational vehicle. Still, if you have the dough and it's the 2nd (or 3rd) vehicle, and you want to do some heavy rock crawling and tow a good sized boat, it seems well suited for that - why not?
In every thread, people keep saying the Jeep Wrangler fad will wear off and then sales will drop. That hasn't happened and most likely will not happen.
Also, people want something "different" means they don't want buy something that looks like an egg, which describes so many vehicles these days.
I'm not sure ANYONE buys a new Jeep vehicle these days to be different.. Jeep moved 240k Wranglers alone last year.
Even the hideous Renagade sells in ridiculous numbers for what it is.
Jeeps seems to be the "go to" vehicles when it comes to trendy domestics...certainly isn't their reputation for reliability moving vehicles.
They hold their value better than any other car Ive seen, I was looking at 2 door regular Jeeps few years ago, was looking to spend around $10K, and I was seeing nothing but older, early to mid 90s models in my price range!
I think they are popular because they are almost the only convertible SUV, Nissan Rogue has a convertible model, but it was only 1 or 2 years and there are not many out there.
Its strange, back in the 70s, 80s and sort of into the 90s, Jeep was known for being the 'affordable' vehicle for outdoorsy people, I doubt many of these newer one even leave the pavement!
Drive a Wrangler on the interstate at 75 for a couple hundred miles. Then tell me about how great they are.
Additionally, anecdotal evidence aside, Jeeps have reliability issues.
