Hi all, I will be moving from New York to Pennsylvania in a month from now and need to lease a car. The conundrum is whether I should leave the car in New York or Pennsylvania.

1) Is it possible to lease a car in a state (PA) where you don't yet have an official address (before closing on the house)?

2) Can I lease a car in New York (where I still currently live) and then just use it in PA when I move? Are there any fees (i.e. Taxes, registration changes) if I do go this route? Do lease companies even allow that?

This will be my first car/lease, so I would appreciate any suggestions you all have. Thanks!

1. No it would still be registered to and taxes based on your current residence

2. Sure people move with leases all the time. You do have to notify them as it will impact the sales tax portion of your lease.

I don't know the answers, but I have a couple of ideas.

First, the Automotive forum is full of people and threads that can explain why leasing is not a good idea.

Second, and more important, don't buy or lease a car before you close on the mortgage. They'll run a credits check before the closing and the new debt could be a problem for you.

Which state has a higher sales tax? Which state has a higher registration cost? If PA sales tax is higher than NY, you might have to pay PA the difference, since you won't have owned the vehicle for very long. If you do buy in NY, you'll have to reregister in PA anyway. I would just buy in PA unless there is a significant savings by buying in NY, which is improbable.
